YWCA Glendale and YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley are joining forces by combing YWCA Glendale’s Camp Rosie and YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley Girls Rise Leadership Camp to leverage resources and deepen its community impact to empower girls in the Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena school district.
The decision to combine summer camps was made after a year of partnering with other girl’s empowerment initiatives. The combination of strengths and traditions from our two organizations will create one innovative and empowering summer camp program, Camp Rosie: Girls on the Rise. One of the unique and exciting aspects of this partnership is that it involves two dynamic organization, with a common set of goals and vision for the future.
YWCA Glendale will serve as the on-site location for summer camp and staff form YWCA Pasadena program staff will manage the program with support for YWCA Glendale’s executive & administrative team.

We have an exciting summer ahead of us, and we are well positioned to ensure the success of our girl’s empowerment summer program and make even grater contributions to the community that we serve.
Camp Rosie: Girls on the Rise Empowerment Program Overview:
This exciting summer program emphasizes girls’ empowerment through workshops and team-building exercises, along with technology and art projects. The camp teaches life skills such as healthy relationships, nutrition, self-defense, and physical fitness. It also incorporates the value of culture through workshops and field trips to the Huntington Library & Gardens, Olvera Street, and Griffith Observatory. Additionally, girls prepare for the future through the camps’ diverse female guest speakers, tours of college campuses, as well as learning entrepreneurship and civic engagement.
Audience: For girls entering in 6th – 9th grade in the fall of 2020 (Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena Unified School District)

- Session 1: June 15th – June 26th
- Session 2: July 6th – July 17th
- Session 3: July 27th – August 7th
Program Objective:
By promoting assertive self-expression, teaching important life skills, and allowing the practice of leadership in a variety of setting, this unique and transformational pre-high school summer program inspires girls to reach their full potential.
Program Goals
Girls Empowerment through STEAM & Non-Traditional Careers
Camp Rosie: Girls on the Rise first priority is Girls Empowerment. Everything we do at summer camp is to make girls feel powerful! The girls have workshops in STEAM and trades/skills not often taught to young women. In this girl-centered space, participants will have an opportunity to express their potential while building friendship and making connections with female entrepreneurs and role models.
Furthermore, the girls visit places of business to learn how companies work, what the day to day is like at different workplaces and learn about entrepreneurship. These are as diverse as a shoe design firm, an engineering firm, a film studio, a magazine, or art conservation. In addition, the program brings in successful women of color to speak about their journey to success and how they were able to achieve their dreams. The goal is for the girls to see the breadth of possibilities available to them and introduce them to potential mentors.
Life Skills & Healthy Relationships
Growing up is more than just about academics. At the Camp Rosie: Girls on the Rise Empowerment Camp, participants will learn skills that will help them become more successful, content, and balanced. Girls explore healthy relationships and bystander intervention, stress reduction techniques including yoga, journaling, and breathing exercises. Additionally, they learn healthy eating through workshops by places like the Pasadena Department of Health and other program partners with the shared goal on teaching participants skills they need to become self-sufficient and live lives free from violence.
Arts & Culture
Learning about the girls’ own cultures and history as well as those of their home fosters an understanding of where they come from and how they can be more inclusive, fair, and respectful of other people. Through a variety of arts and culture activities girls will deepen their understanding through the exploration of social justice & cultural museums and learn an appreciation for all artists and explore different styles of musical performance facilitated by Glendale Arts.
Leadership & Civic Engagement
The knowledge we provide helps girls prepare for their FUTURE. During the Camp the girls visit a variety of institutions of higher education so that they can see themselves going to school after high school. Whether it is a community college like PCC, a trade school, a specialty school like the Art Center College of Design, or a 4-year university like CalTech or La Verne University, the girls need to know that these schools are within reach. As a result, they have the opportunity to choose to go where they are comfortable and feel they can reach the goals they set out for themselves. Most importantly, they’ll learn principles of social justice and community engagement and the skills that will make them leaders in their community. One regular trip we make is to Pasadena City Hall and Glendale City Hall where the girls learn about the history of the building and gain an understanding of how city government works and how they can get involved. Additionally, throughout the camp the girls learn the interpersonal skills they need to be heard including public speaking, conflict resolution, and teamwork.
