(Glendale, CA) On Tuesday, January 14th, the Glendale Unified School District will have the opportunity
to make history by adopting a resolution to acknowledge their responsibility to address racism on
school campuses and to formally observe and celebrate February as Black History Month, and the
week of February 3rd-7th as “Black Lives Matter at School: Week of Action,” an annual week of action,
affirmation and solidarity.

According to the resolution, Black History Month and the Black Lives Matter at School: Week of Action
are “ intended to highlight, uplift and affirm the rich history and contributions of the African American
Community; to cultivate in African American students a sense of pride, self-worth, and self-love; and to
develop a widespread acknowledgment and appreciation for the contributions African American
people.”

YWCA Glendale, a leading nonprofit dedicated to empowering women and eliminating racism,
encourages the Glendale Unified School District to take these important steps to improve the school
and community experience for African American students in Glendale. YWCA Glendale looks forward
to identifying opportunities to collaborate with the district and our community partners who brought
this resolution forward to support students and community members during Black History Month and
beyond.
