Local Individuals Engage Friends and Families to Support YWCA Glendale’s Financial Literacy Services for Domestic Violence Survivors
Glendale, CA—“Why don’t they just leave?” It’s the number one question people ask about survivors of domestic violence. And for millions of survivors in the United States, the reason they don’t leave is that they don’t have the financial resources to do so. Ninety-eight percent of women who experience domestic violence also experience financial abuse, where the abuser limits or prevents access to financial resources, like bank accounts and job opportunities—therefore threatening a woman’s self-sufficiency and financial independence.
As a 40-year provider of services for domestic violence survivors, YWCA Glendale is partnering with the Allstate Foundation to increase public awareness about financial abuse during the month of October, also known as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As a participant of the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge, YWCA Glendale joins 200 organizations in a crowdfunding competition. The Challenge is split into two divisions based on operating budget, and the nonprofit in each division that raises the most money will receive a $100,000 grant.
All donations to YWCA Glendale’s Purple Purse Challenge page will fund YWCA Glendale’s life-changing services for survivors of financial abuse, including an emergency shelter, housing services, long-term supportive services, therapy, legal services, a 24-hour hotline, and community education and advocacy.
Last year alone, YWCA Glendale was able to provide over $15,000 in assistance for rental applications, utility bill assistance, furniture, appliances, and security deposits to 146 survivors facing financial hardship. This is a critical start to helping survivors build financial security and find a safe way out of their abusive situations.
