YWCA Glendale announces permanent closure of pool and hosts commemoration event

Glendale, CA November 9, 2017 – Amid years of decline in pool usage, rising operating costs and anticipated reinvestment, YWCA Glendale will permanently close its swimming pool and end its aquatics program on Dec. 31, 2017.

“According to recent assessments, the pool, locker rooms, pipes and pumps all will require major capital reinvestments. These reasons, along with the declining number of aquatics participants, have led us to the decision to close our pool,” explains Executive Director Tara Peterson, “Continuing to operate it at a deficit undermines the health of our other programs. This decision, while difficult, ensures we can continue to provide Camp Y for youth, operate our Sunrise Village Emergency Shelter, and provide case management, childcare, counseling, legal advocacy and more to women and children leaving abusive circumstances.”

YWCA Glendale officials will determine the most effective use for the pool space and anticipates no other program closures. YWCA Glendale will continue to support local community groups by making available its conference rooms, ballroom and other office space.

YWCA Glendale will waive aquatic program fees for existing participants during the month of December, as well as provide a 7-day pass to the pool at YMCA of Glendale. YWCA Glendale will also hold an appreciation ceremony in its welcome center on Dec. 19 at 6:30pm where community members can commemorate the long history of the pool and learn about other aquatics programs in the area.
